Welcome to All the Pleasures

“Welcome to all the Pleasures” is Pacific MusicWorks’ 2013-14 season opener – a truly delightful program of music from England, centered around one of Henry Purcell’s magnificent odes to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, and performed by a glittering quintet of vocal stars from the early music scene.

There is plenty of parking right by the church, both U Park lots and street parking. The main entrance to the performance will be off Seneca. The handicap entrance is off Harvard. We will have volunteers on hand at both entrances.

Written for Good Friday in 1724, the St. John Passion is Bach’s emotional and musically dramatic account of the last days of Jesus, according to the Gospel of John. In this intimate performance the nine solo singers will also act as the chorus.

This performance is part of the Passions Project, a collaboration with the Seattle Symphony, who will be performing the St Matthew Passion on February 21 and 22 at 8pm with Ludovic Morlot conducting. The two organizations will share the same vocal soloists.

The Vocal Concerto: 17th-Century Cantatas for Bass

Legendary vocalist Harry van der Kamp, renowned interpreter of the bass cantata, joins long-time colleagues Monica Huggett and lute virtuoso Stephen Stubbs, for rarely heard masterpieces from 17th-century Germany.

G. F. Handel’s brilliant English oratorio Semele illuminates the darkly comedic story of a mortal woman’s tryst with a dangerous God. Chaos ensues in the wake of unbridled lust, jealousy and revenge.

Pacific MusicWorks and the UW School of Music present Semele in a visceral new staging by an acclaimed production team led by PMW artistic director and conductor Stephen Stubbs and Los Angeles-based director and visual artist James Darrah.

From the Andrews Sisters through the Supremes, the Wailin Jennys and beyond, women’s vocal trios have delighted us. This project demonstrates just how far
back this tradition goes. Wayward Sisters includes the best of 17th century Italian repertoire for three female voices by Luigi Rossi and Domenico Mazzochi as well as
a new composition by Seattle composer Karen P. Thomas.
